SECOND LOTTERY: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I enter a request for the second lottery?

  • If you are not automatically included in the second lottery as outlined below, please submit a new school request.

If you need assistance, you can contact our Student Placement team at SPS.Department@mpls.k12.mn.us or 612.668.1840.

Q: What is the second lottery?

  • School requests received by April 12 will have a second lottery opportunity focused on ensuring a mix of students from all economic backgrounds in our magnets, and focused on community schools that still have lots of room.

Some students will automatically be included in this second lottery as outlined in the chart below. Please know that participating in the second lottery does not guarantee placement at a school.

If you’d like to explore other school options, you can do so and still submit a new request for the second lottery until the April 12 due date.

Q: What if I want to request my community school?

  • If you request your community school, the Student Placement team will work to process your request as quickly as possible. If there is placement capacity at your community school, you will receive a placement notification letter by either mail or email. If placement is not possible, a team member will work with you to identify options with openings where we can place your child right away, while they remain on the waiting list for your first requested school.

Q: What if my community school is changing as part of the CDD, but I want to request to stay at my current school?

  • Current MPS families whose student's school is changing as part of the CDD are automatically assigned to their new CDD school. If you would like to remain at your current school and not transition as part of the CDD, you will need to submit a request as part of the second lottery. Please know placement is not guaranteed, and the priority in the lottery is ensuring a mix of students from all economic backgrounds in our magnets and fililng community schools that still have lots of room.

Q: If I request by the due-date, will I get a placement?

  • Participating in the second lottery does not guarantee placement at a school. Unfortunately, some schools and grades may reach capacity.

Q: What if I submit a request after the due-date?

  • While the second lottery has an April 12 due date, MPS places students in schools all year long based on placement criteria and available space. All requests will be processed whether they are received before or after the due date, and if there isn’t space at the school(s) you request, we will work with you to identify options where we can place your child right away. They remain on the waiting list for your first-requested school in the lottery.

Q: Will students who already went through the request process be automatically entered in the lottery?

  • Some students will automatically be included. Please see the chart below for more information.

Q: What if I got my first requested school in the first lottery, but now I want to request a different school?

  • You can submit a request for any school at any time. If you request your community school, we will try to place right away, and if you request a magnet school before April 12, your request will be entered in the lottery.

Q: What if I go through the second lottery but still am not placed at a school?

  • Our Student Placement team will work with you to with you to identify options with openings where we can place your child right away, while they remain on the waiting list for your first-requested school.
