Important Dates

Exploring your school options to find the best school program for your child is an important process. 

Read here to learn the important steps and due dates related to the annual school enrollment process which begins in November each fall.

MPS District School Calendar

November - December 2025

  • November 11 is the Enrollment Season Kick-off!
  • The school request portal opens and the Placement Department begins accepting applications. Complete the new Online Registration form at ExploreMPS.org.

December 2025 – January 2026

  • This is the season for parents to gather information and learn about options.
  • Contact schools you're interested in to learn about tours and open house events.
  • January 10: You're invited! Please come to the Minneapolis School Finder Fair  at Minneapolis College between 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. There's free parking, childcare, refreshments, prizes and a wealth of information!

February – March 2026

  • February 9: For the best chance of getting your first choice school, submit your application by the due-date for inclusion in the first school request lottery.
  • Families requesting their address-based community school as their first choice will receive early automatic notification, and official communication post-lottery.
  • Mid - February: The first lottery will run, honoring as many magnet and out-of-area community school requests as possible, based on projected openings.
  • Mid - March: Lottery result notification will be sent to families. 
  • Families have three weeks to accept or decline their placement. This is done by clicking a link and a button - then it's locked in and registration is complete!

April 2026

  • April 1: Due-date for inclusion in the second school request lottery (for magnet requests only)

Late spring / Early summer 2026

  • Watch for news from your new school and attend welcome events.
  • Families submit additional information to schools: Educational Benefits form, Transportation request, birth document and immunization records, etc.
  • Transportation requests need to be submitted before July 31 to ensure a bus stop for the start of school.

Late summer 2026

  • Families are notified of their bus stop information
  • High school registration
